Day, April 15, 1843 In New
York,USA.

Born in a wealthy and Highly
Educated family of New York, Henry
James studied not at one school or
one place,rather kept shuttling
between America and Europe, Had
Had His Learning At
Paris,Bohn,Gene va and New York .

He got admission for a brief period
at HARVARD LAW SCHOOL for
studing law,but abandoned law for
literature And had educated
himself in American,Britis
h,Italian,Frenc h,German and
Russian Literature .

Henry James wrote his first story at
21 and throughout his life he had
been a regular contributor for
various american and european
periodicals,new spapers,magazin
es, chief among them were THE
NATION n ATLANTIC MONTHLY.

He left America and settled down
in europe,mainly in England.

His great traveling experiences
gave him a suitable opportunity to
observe and study various cultures
on the both sides of the Atlantic
And Provided him a fine material
for writing novels n stories.

His was truly transatlantic !

He often detailed the shocks that
an american finds entering into
europe by way of the inherent
conflict,rather clashes between
American way of living and that of
europe!

Henry James had his characters in
full sway,allowing him or her to
express without any reservations
or constraints imposed by the
author. His utilization of ‘POINTS OF
VIEW’ while delienating a character
under a situation, was simply
brilliant !

Henry James Was Sort Of A Bridge
Between 19th-Cent. And 20th-Cent.
Or More Precisely ,between
Victorianism And Modernism !

James was ahead of his times and
had a mastery over The Art of
Fiction ! He introduced techniques
that were to become definitive
distinctions in modern novels, like
INTERIOR MONOLOGUE,CONSC
IOUSNESS. . .et.al. !

A prolific author,Henry James
Wrote 22 Novels, 115 Shortstories,
12 Plays, Half a Dozen Travelogues,
Three Volumes of Memoirs and
numerous essays on art n
literature.

‘PORTRAIT OF A LADY’ , ‘DAISY
MILLER’ ‘THE AMBASSADOR’ , ‘THE
TURN OF THE SCREW’ , ‘WHAT MESSIE
KNOWS’ , ‘THE BOSTONIANS’ , ‘THE
AMERICANS’ are some of his
famous books.

He was naturalized as a british
citizen in 1915.

He died on february 28, 1916 at
the age of 72.

His place in the pantheon of great
literary figures of world literature
is still well secured !
And,many authors as well as critics
annointed him as THE MASTER
(NOVELIST).
