Octavio Paz ,one of the pre-
eminent poets and essayists of
the 20th-cent., was born on
March 31 ,1914 in Mexico-
city ,Mexico.He is considered as
one of the few authors who have
had a superb and equal
command over prose and poetry,
and at times,it is really very hard
task to differentiate his poems
from his prose pieces.
Born in a family of intellectual,
liberal and politically active
ambience,Octavio Paz got himself
well acquainted with world
literature reading books in his
grandfather’s big sprawling
library.
Octavio Paz’s family had to bear a
few years exile due to a
particular political allegiance and
they went to the United States
where Paz had had his early
education. The exile was forced
due to Paz’s father’s all out
support for the Revolutionary
Leader,E.Zapatta.
After the end of their exile the
family returned back home and
Octavio Paz continued his
education and at the age of 17,
he got his poem published and
by the age of 19, a full book of
poems arrived.IT WAS TITLED
‘WILD MOON’ and said to have
been inspired by the writings of
D.H.LAWRENCE.
In 1943, Octavio Paz got an
opportunity to study in the states
by winning the Guggenheim
Scholarship.Paz studied in the
University of California at
Berkeley,CA,USA. It proved a great
period of learning during which
Paz got exposure to the famous
works of several eminent
authors.
He returned back to Mexico in
1945 and had joined the
Diplomatic Services that sent him
to France, India and other
nations.
Paz wrote some of his famous
works during those diplomatic
years.
THE LABYRINTHS OF SOLITUDE,
considered by many as Paz’s
magnum-opus, was completed in
Paris.
EAST SLOPES and THE MONKEY
GRAMARRIAN,two of his most
remarkable works, he completed
while in India during 1962 -68 .

Octavio Paz wrote more than 20
books of prose and poetry and
his main themes were MEXICAN
IDENTITY, CULTURE, LANGUAGE,
LOVE, POLITICS, EROTICISM,
HUMAN EXISTENCE. . .et.al .
He brought the study of
history,religion,philosophy,p
olitical thoughts in sharp focus
into his writings.
He explored the boundaries of
Language and Thinking. Paz’s
essays provide a very deep
studies of contemporary
world,chiefly through the
Mexican Identiy with Historical
Perspective mixed with the
Present Analyses of Various
Aspects of Human Lives and
Predicaments.
His later masterpiece,IN SEARCH
OF THE PRESENT, proves his
unusual grasp over Existential
Dilemma.
His styles were many as he wrote
in various modes, chief among
them were
Surrealism,Existentialism, Post
Modernism And Without any
‘ISMs’ !
Octavio Paz got The Nobel Prize
For Literature In 1990.
He also taught at Harvard
University and lectures delivered
during his stint at the
Harvard,later came in book form
full of insights into
Literature,Culture And Arts.
Paz died of cancer in 1998 ,at the
age of 84.
OCTAVIO PAZ STILL REMAINS A
HUGE HIT WITH THE YOUNGER
GENERATION AND IS READ PLUS
REVERED WORLDWIDE.
