HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ALBERTO MORAVIA,THE GREAT ITALIAN NOVELIST AND STORY WRITER !

(1.) ” MY LIFE, AS, EVERYONE ELSE’S, IS CHAOS ! ”
(2.) ‘BELOVED : WHAT YOU WANT, LIGHT OR DARK ?
LOVER : I WANT DARK !’
Alberto Moravia.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Today In 1907,The Great Italian Novelist,ALBERTO MORAVIA, Was Born In Rome,ITALY.He Was To Become The Most Successful Among Italian Authors Of The Last Century.Moravia Was Very Sharp Observer Of Italian Society And His Works Inform This Very Authentically. He Had Seen The World As A Young Journalist Working As A Foreign Correspondent Of The Italian Newspaper,LA STAMPA and Others. He Experienced The Impacts That The Second World War Had On Europe In Particular And Human Psyche In General. He Had Also A First Hand Experiences Of The Rise Of The Ultra-Right Political Outfits Like Fascism In Italy Under Mussolini And Nazism Under Hitler!During An Escape From Rome Around 1940 When The WW-II Was At Its Height,Moravia Had Observed The Pitiable Plights Of Poor Folks In Mountainous Area In Rural Italy Where He Had To Take Shelter For Nearly One Year While Fleeing From Mussolini’s Wrath And Censor !
These Things Became The Subject Matters Of His Literary Enterprise And Moravia Depicted Them More Vividly And Critically Than Any Other Italian Authors! These Themes Remained The Mainstay Of His Works And Due To Such Repetitiveness,He Got A Great Deal Of Criticism As Being An Author Of Limited Range. . .etc. !

ALBERTO MORAVIA’s Literary Career Spanned For Nearly Six Decades And That Was Really Very Telling Thing Of A Writer, Which Proves, Among Many Other Things, His Popularity Amongst The Readers In And Out Of Italy! His Novels Sold A Million Copies In USA Through Translation.

Alberto Moravia Presented ,In Nutshell, The Decadence Set In And Eating Into The Vitals Of Italian Society,Culture And Above All Human Values!
Themes Like Alienation, Isolation,Sexuality As A Compensation For Spiritual Barreness,The Man Woman Relation,The Relation Of An Individual To That Of Society . . ..et.al Are Well Explored By Him.

‘TIME OF INDIFFERENCE’ , ‘THE CONFORMIST’ , ‘CONTEMPT’ , ‘DISOBEDIENCE’ , ‘TWO ADOLESCENTS’ , ‘THE WOMAN OF ROME’ , ‘THE EMPTY CANVAS’ . . .are some of his notable books. Many Works Of Moravia Were Adapted For Movies And That Had Helped Him Gain Rather Wider Popularity! Great Directors Like JEAN-LUC-GODARD and BERNARDO BERTOLUCCI had Adapted Moravia’s Works For Movies And The Films Like ‘THE CONFORMIST’ and ‘CONTEMPT’ Got Huge International Acclaim , So Did ‘TWO WOMEN’ For Which Sophia Loren Had The Best Actress’ Academy!
Alberto Moravia Married Twice And Had Sort Of ‘LIVE-IN’ Relation Between His First Divorce And Second Marriage!
Though,ALBERTO MORAVIA Was A Giant Of 20th-Century Literature,His Books In Other Languages,Especially,In English,Are Becoming Rarity!AND,THAT’S SO SAD !
If You Want To Get An Authentic Feel Of ‘EXISTENTIAL ENNUI AND EMOTIONAL ARIDITY’ ,I would highly recommend two of Moravia’s Works : THE CONFORMIST and CONTEMPT . .and, if you love reading short-story,then go for ROMAN TALES and MORE ROMAN TALES. . . .and if you love to read essays on the process of writing, the functions of art n the likes, then try your hands on ‘MAN AS AN END’ ! !
Sadly,I too have read only these few books and am still away from the large number of Moravia’s works – he was a prolific author who wrote more than 20 novels and many story collections and countless articles!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY,MORAVIA !
