NOT ONLY THE INDIAN-CINEMA,BUT ALSO THE WORLD-CINEMA IS SAID TO HAVE BEEN BLESSED WITH THE RARE BENGALI FILM-MAKER ,MR. SATYAJIT RAY !
AKIRA KUROSAWA, THE WORLD FAMOUS JAPANESE FILM-MAKER HAD ONCE SAID -‘ NOT TO HAVE SEEN SATYAJIT RAY’S MOVIES ,IS LIKE BORN IN THIS WORLD AND HAVING NEVER SEEN THE SUN OR THE MOON ‘ !
SATYAJIT RAY, The Great Bengali/Indian Film-maker was born this day (2’May) in 1921 in North Calcutta .
Satyajit Ray was declared in BERLIN FILM FESTIVAL (1978) as ONE OF THE THREE GREATEST FILM MAKERS OF ALL TIME.
His Masterpiece called ‘APU TRILOGY’ won umpteen awards inside and outside India.SATYAJITRAY WAS HONORED WITH A ‘LIFE TIME ACHIEVEMENT HONORARY OSCAR’ .
His very first film was PATHER PANCHALI or ‘THE SONG OF THE LITTLE ROAD’ which he somehowmanaged under extreme financial restraints with an aid from the state government and ateam of all novice people including himself having no experiences of film making.
‘PATHER PANCHALI’ was premiered in NEW YORK too.
Initially there was kind of lukewarm response to the film asit was quite different from the rest of cinemas made those days in India, but, gradually the film gathered momentum and peoplestarted to flock Theaters to watch this movies once, twice, thrice. . .several times!IT WAS YEAR 1955.
The movie achieved wider acclaim in India and more so on the International Stage culminating in getting The Cannes Film Festival’s award : ‘THE BEST HUMAN DOCUMENT’.
Satyajit Ray shot to global fame that he effortlessly carried in future with the next two films of ‘APU-TRILOGY’ n many others.
‘APARAJITO’ or ‘THE UNVANQUISHED’ was the second film of the ‘Apu-Trilogy’.The Thirdn last one was ‘APUR SANSAR’ or ‘THE WORLD OF APU’.
This trilogy is telling the story of a boy named APU and his family. How APU relates himself with his sister, his abused mother, his financially ruined father and the society of Post-Independent India, especially, the village life that was poverty ridden!
Through the eyes of a boy, Satyajit Ray presented kind of a very meaningful commentary on the India after its Independence from the Britishers.HOW COMMONFOLKS LEAD LIFE FACING MULTITUDES OF PROBLEMS AND DAUNTING CHALLENGES UNDER VERY DESPAIRING SCENARIO.
Ray was not Political in his tone or approach and he was often criticised for not taking political themes into his cinemas, yet,one could well read the glimpses n indirect depictions of themes that were of course belonged to Policy-framing and Decision-making of the Political-Establishment of the time better known in Indian History as ‘NEHRUVIAN-ERA’.
Satyajit Ray was also criticised forExporting Poverty Through his films and a director who made films for the western audience. ..and many such charges were levelled against him by people from Indian Cinema and Indian Politics.
SATYAJIT RAY GAVE PRIORITY TO HUMAN CONCERNS AND PROBLEMS AND THERFORE HIS BULK OF WORKS REFLECTING THIS ,CAN’T BEDISMISSED AS PAROCHIAL OR NARROW OR LOPSIDED. ..rather,HIS WAS THE ARTISTIC VISIONARY !
Ray had seen 100 MOVIES IN LONDON IN SIX MONTHS while on a learning stint as he was sent bythe advertising company he was working for in Calcutta.HIS LONDON DAYS SHAPED HIS DETERMINATION PLUS DREAM TO BE A FILM MAKER!
He was highly impressed by De Sica’s THE BICYCLE-THIEVES.
When the famous french director,JEAN RENOIR visited Calcutta for making a film on India and was in search for location,RAY helped him and had learned many things from Jean Renoir .’THE RIVER’ became a memorable film by Renoir.
SATYAJIT RAY ALSO WROTE AROUND 25 BOOKS OF SHORT-STORIES.RAY WAS A ONE-MAN ARMY as he used to compose songs for his movies, drew sketches of film, did the screenplays, handled camera, set the music. . . .et.al. !
SATYAJIT RAY WAS HIGHLY INFLUENCED BY THE GREAT BENGALI AUTHOR AND NOBEL-LAUREATE, RABINDRANATH TAGORE and had in fact studied in Tagore’s Open-Air-University, The VISWABHARATI at SHANTI-NIKETAN.Ray made a couple of great films based upon Tagore’s Stories, viz. ‘CHARULATA’ ‘DEVI’ or ‘THE GODDESS’.
‘THE MUSIC ROOM’ was Ray’s one of the best film depicting the social-transformation in India where the old-landlords’ class was giving way to the newer educated n so-called modern middle-class!
In 2010, ‘APU-TRILOGY’ WAS DECLARED AS THE 12’TH (TWELFTH)BEST ART HOUSE FILM EVER MADE IN THE WHOLE WORLD !
A happy birthday to SATYAJIT RAY!
