R.I.P #ADRIENNE RICH!
The great american poet n essayist has died at the age of 82.
She was one of the most powerful female voice of american-culture n society.
Adrienne Rich sort of carried crusade against the inherent injustice of contemporary american society all through her life.
She remained a bitter critic of war of all forms n on any pretext, had become a powerful articulator of the anti-VIETNAM-WAR movement in america.
Adrienne Rich was born in 1929 in Baltimore to an ambitious pathologist father n a fine pianist mother. She was raised in that ambitious home-environment and had excelled at academics.
She was married to a Harvard-Economics Professor and had three children.Unfortunately, her married life turned sour n she shifted to New York .
ADRIENNE RICH’S PERSONAL DISILLUSIONMENT IN MARRIAGE HAD A GREAT IMPACT ON HER UNDERSTANDINGS OF THE OVERALL STATUS OF WOMEN IN SOCIETY N THAT HAD SHAPED HER VIEWS IN BECOMING ONE OF THE REVERED FIGURES IN FEMINIST MOVEMENT.SHE WROTE EXTENSIVELY ON THE PLACE N PLIGHT OF FEMININE-EXISTENCE IN FORMS OF PAMPHLETS N ESSAYS!
She started her poetic journey by light verse which were quite decorous in nature. She wrote under some clear influence of Yeats n Auden, the latter had a greater impact n had written FOREWORDS for her first poetry collection that made her win her first among many awards :YALE PRIZE FOR YOUNGER POETS!
‘SNAPSHOTS FROM A DAUGHTER-IN-LAW’ was her first book that won critical acclaim n had established her as a poet of note!
Adrienne became a fierce radical in her views later in 70s n 80s and then onwards hers were the poems full of political problems n the quest for justice, the hope for an egalitarian society . .et.al. !
ADRIENNE RICH WAS VERY MUCH PEEVED AT THE ‘MYTH OF AMERICAN DREAM’ as her writings became sort of mouthpiece for the marginalia n disadvantaged part of american society!
FOR ADRIENNE RICH,ART WAS AN HONEST ENGAGEMENT WITH THE PROBLEMS OF SOCIETY N SHE WAS KIND OF A ‘POET-ACTIVIST’ ALL HER LIFE!
The growing gap between rich n poor was such an emotional theme to her that she had refused the highest american award for artists:-NATIONAL MEDAL in 1997.AND,HAD CRITICIZED THE THEN CLINTON- ADMINSTRATION DUE TO ITS APATHY FOR THOSE LARGE PART OF AMERICAN SOCIETY WHO WERE NOT IN THE MAINSTREAM!
‘DIVING INTO THE WRECK’ is a powerful poem-collection.
‘WHEN DEAD AWAKEN-re-vision writing’is another fine work.
THE DEATH OF ADRIENNE RICH HAS CREATED A LARGE N DEEP VOID THAT SEEMS IRREPLACEABLE”
MAY ALMIGHTY OFFER A FITTING CORNER OF PARADISE N GRANT PEACE N SALVATION TO HER SOUL !
