This first week of 2012 might be a good start in the life of a long isolated asian country of BURMA or MYANMAR!Nearly 200 political prisoners were released a day before yesterday and now the British Foreign Secretary is on a 2 days historic visit of Burma: last such visit took place in 1955!Lots of hopes and aspirations from this important tour by Mr.Hague:-as outlined by none other than the most famous Burmese leader,Ms.Aung San Suu Kyi on her Facebook-page!Suu Kyi released last year is seemingly hopeful of the various reforms that this partially civilian government led by the president,Mr.Thein Sein.
BURMA had dismissed the elected government of Ms.Suu Kyi in 1990 and since then uptill the last year, remained under the oppressive plus repressive rule by the military JUNTA.Aung San Suu Kyi was put under house arrest and had to spend around 15yrs under such confinement, her party- National Liberation for Democracy or NLD was banned and thousands were put behind bars. .The Junta cut off its ties from the rest of the world and,it was friendly with the two countries mostly:-CHINA and NORTH KOREA.ALL DEMOCRATIC-NORMS SUSPENDED. . .ETHNIC-CONFLICTS FLARED UP. .
DRUGS N NARCOTICS TRAFFICKING INCREASED. . .ALL HUMAN-RIGHTS WENT UP IN SMOKE. . .
On the whole, for two decades(1990 to 2010) BURMA BECAME ‘AN AREA OF DARKNESS’.
In 2007,there was a huge protest march by the civilians n most remarkably by the young monks against the draconian rule of the junta.THAT HAD CAUGHT THE WORLDWIDE ATTENTION.The junta repressed that rebellion and put many thousands behind the bars.Such barbarian acts attracted huge condemnation from the international community.More sanctions piled up!US led the initiative of putting large number of sanctions against the junta when they dismissed the democratic regime. .BURMA REMAINED ISOLATED FROM THE REST OF THE WORLD FOR 2 DECADES!
China invested in billions especially in strengthening infrastructure n the various oil n gas refineries as Burma is very rich in terms of petroleums and other natural resources.CHINA DOMINATED BURMA, ALONG WITH NORTH KOREA!
At domestic-front there has been no let-up in the ethenic-strife that cost thousands of lives.
After this 2 decades of military rule,BURMA SAW SOME RAYS OF HOPE as the junta announced elections for the national assembly!THIS ELECTED GOVERNMENT UNDER THE RETIRED MILITARY GENERAL,MR.THEIN SEIN,IS JUST NOMINAL IN NATURE AS THE REAL POWERS STILL REST WITH THE MILITARY. . .
But,after the release of Aung San Suu Kyi and the various announcements for reforms by this govt.,had had some nicer impacts within n without BURMA. .
USA sent Secretary of states,HILLARY CLINTON TO BURMA ON A THREE DAYS VISIT TO ASSESS THE GROUND REALITIES OF THE NEW FOUND REFORMATIVE ZEAL OF THE BURMESE GOVERNMENT.Clinton toured a month ago and had hoped for a better deal plus a time bound assistance to Burma provided it freed all the political prisoners, end ethenic conflicts, stop all overt or covert links with N.KOREA and continue the reformative measures in order to establish human-rights,decrease poverty. . .
And,now the british secretary too has reiterated these preconditions for any assistance to Burma. .
Aung San Suu Kyi hopes that the new dawn is near, although, she speaks with caution!
In April there are by-elections and she will be more conclusive after the elections wherein her party would take part. .
If the election goes in a free n fair way, there will sure be more internationational support for BURMA!
